Weblog for Senegal: Sustainable Development at EcoYoff - Fall 2005

Hey Howdy Hey! - Katie

Right now I am living in the middle of nowhere...Antonito, Colorado. I've been working on a Ranch the past three months in order to pay for this study abroad opportunity in Senegal.

I'll be leaving in a week on a hectic three day journey starting the 29th on a Greyhound and ending the 31st in the Dakar airport. Although I'm a little nervous since I will not be able to go home to gather my senses in between work and school, I have never been more excited about anything in my life and hope to absorb everything I can in the short amount of time abroad.

To those of you who don't know me, my name is Katie Paul and I hail from San Diego, California. Currently I am a junior at the University of California at Santa Barbara where I am majoring in Global Studies with an emphasis on Africa, and hope to minor in Women, Culture, and Development studies. Studying abroad in French West Africa is a dream come true for me, and I hope to achieve fluency (or at least have a vast improvement) in French, and learn all about Sustainable Development so I can go and teach others.

Although I have not spoken with my host family, I understand I will be living with two students, Djibril Séne and Oulimata Samb, and their two children in the Mbenguene Quarter of Yoff. It will be hard to say goodbye to all the amazing friends I have made at Rainbow Trout Ranch, but I am thrilled at the tremendous adventure ahead, and hope everyone reading will experience it with me.
