The health and safety of students and faculty on Living Routes programs is always our highest priority. The following are measures that we take on all of our programs:

• Living Routes has clearly articulated health and safety protocols and procedures compiled in our Health and Safety Manual. This manual is reviewed and updated on a yearly basis to ensure the highest standard of care is in place on all Living Routes programs. All program faculty and staff have a copy of this manual and ready access to it at all times.
  
• Living Routes faculty and staff have extensive international experience and numerous affiliations throughout our various host communities and countries. These individuals and networks ensure that we stay informed about changing conditions and help us prevent health and safety risks while also responding to emergencies quickly and effectively if they should arise.
  
• Our program managers and directors have regular communication with field staff and faculty, who all carry emergency cell phones and are trained to carry out Living Routes Emergency and Evacuation Protocols, in the event that we must respond to an emergency, or remove a student or program from the field.
  
• We receive regular updates from the U.S. State Department and always abide by their safety precautions, travel warnings, and recommendations for U.S. citizens abroad.
  
• All students receive a comprehensive handbook including detailed chapters on health, safety and guidelines for preventing illness during the program.
  
• Prior to arrival in the host country, students are registered at the U.S. consulate or embassy that has jurisdiction over their program location and staff members receive updates on local precautions and recommendations.
  
• We abide by the safety guidelines set out by the National Association for Foreign Study Abroad (NAFSA). We also participate in several NAFSA sponsored listserves for administrators of Study Abroad programs.
  
• During the first week of our programs, field faculty and staff conduct extensive orientations, to inform students about the countries, and cultures in which they will be living. Students are educated about necessary health and safety precautions they must take while abroad, how to prevent injury and illness and how to deal with an emergency if one should arise.
  
• Students each receive an Emergency Card with their program's itinerary, important local and U.S emergency contacts, in addition to action steps they should take in case of emergency. They are asked to carry this information at all times.
  
• Student Emergency Contact forms are kept on file in the Amherst office and also with program faculty.
  
• All students on our semester programs have a medical exam prior to enrollment and are required to maintain U.S based medical insurance during their program.
  
• Living Routes provides basic travel insurance to all students on our programs through iNext that includes major medical, evacuation, repatriation, and 24-hour emergency assistance.
