Financial Aid

 Living Routes

Financial Aid Application

Studying Abroad is an investment in your future. There are many costs in developing and running a safe, enjoyable and transformational program abroad, and Living Routes is committed to creating affordable, broadly accessible programs. We are partnering with more and more colleges and accelerating our own scholarship efforts.

While the best place to look for financial aid for study abroad is your home college or university, your federal loans and scholarships will often apply to Living Routes programs.

Your study abroad and financial aid offices as well as your academic advisor may also be aware of additional loans and grant opportunities that may be available to you, including your own school's institutional aid. While our scholarship fund is currently modest, Living Routes offers need-based Scholarships (usually $500-$1,500 for semester programs, $250-600 for 3-week programs) to all who qualify and apply. To apply for our scholarships, please complete the Living Routes Financial Aid Application (Feel free to call to request one by mail). Applications for financial assistance will be reviewed only after you have been accepted into a program and will not be official until we receive your deposit confirming your participation. Funds are limited, so apply early.

Below are other excellent sources for aid to fund your Living Routes program. Please also consider your personal resources, extended family, and organizations that your family members work for or belong to (they often have educational loan or scholarship programs).

  • Gilman International Scholarship Program with grants up to $5,000 for those who receive U.S. Pell Grants.
  • Sara's Wish Foundation travel scholarships for young women
  • Rotary International The Rotarians offer scholarships up to $26,000 for Israeli university studies and Hebrew studies.
  • The Amy Adine Schulman Scholarship Fund The grant requires a commitment to educate others through lecture, program or other activities upon returning to your home or school community. You must be willing and able to do this so others will have the opportunity to learn about and to be inspired to do similar work.
  • Boren Scholarship Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined.
  • Diversity Abroad Participants on Living Routes programs are eligible for the numerous scholarships offered at Diversity Abroad.
For Israel Programs Only:
  • MASA Israel $1,000 grants (additional grants based on need) for Jewish students to our program in Israel.
  • Haas/Koshland Memorial Award Provides up to $20,000 to support a year of study and personal development in Israel. The award is open to college students, from sophomore year through graduate school, who are from, or attend school in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • The Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies The Israel Scholarship Committee of the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies administers a limited amount of financial assistance for high school and college students to travel and study in Israel. For western MA residents studying in Israel, there is also the Grinspoon Foundation.

There are also alternative student loans as well, through private or quasi government agencies. These loans are usually less favorable (they usually require repayment to begin immediately rather than after you graduate) but they are dependable sources of funding for study.
